What to do in the garden in September

The summer is almost over, but there is still a lot to do in the garden. Here are some of the chores Canadian gardeners should add to their fall gardening list.

1. Plant cool-weather crops such as kale, Brussel sprouts, carrots, dwarf peas, fall garlic. Some will even be tastier due to a rise in their sugar content.
2. Plant spring-blooming bulbs such as crocuses, tulips and daffodils, and wait for the show to begin next spring. Add a little fertilizer to stimulate them.
3. Transplant herbs such as chives, mint, parsley, rosemary and thyme in pots to continue growing them indoors through the winter.
4. Fix all thin or bare areas in your lawn. Spread new seed and water daily until fully established.
5. Listen to weather forecasts and be prepared to cover frost-tender plants with hotcaps or row covers. Start bringing houseplants back indoors.
6. Clean up any dead or dying fruit or veggie as they could spread disease.
7. Stop fertilizing perennials and roses as it could trigger new growth that will certainly be nipped by the cold this winter.
8. If you don't already have one, build a compost bin. Add plant material such as dead leaves to make your own organic fertilizer.
